On December 6th, 2017, The Western Chapter presented a tour of the University of Waterloo’s Engineering Department and met the Formula Motorsport team. The host for the evening was Akmal Syed, an engineering student at the university and an active member of the motorsports team. The goal of the team is to design, fabricate and build a race car to enter autocross competitions in which you not only compete against the clock, but other university entries as well. Akmal pointed out that “adding lightness” is the continual theme to manufacture such a vehicle and it was great to see that CTMA member companies, Hibar Systems Inc, XL Tool Inc., Hallink RSB Inc., Cimetrix Solutions Inc., and In-House Solutions Inc., have sponsored this endeavour by either machining parts, or volunteering design and engineering advice.
Participants also toured the machine shop, where students are encouraged to learn machining processes by professional staff, which includes milling, turning and CNC machining and then got to see an impressive 3D department.
After the tour participants reassembled at the Wildcraft Grill, where Tong Ngo of BMO, gave a presentation entitled “A banking perspective on the NAFTA Re-negotiations and the implication on the Canadian Tool and Machining Industry”. Scenarios of possible outcomes and what may happen from a banking viewpoint where presented.
